Erosion at Lampu Satu Beach, Merauke, Threatens Residents' Homes

Coastal erosion at Lampu Satu Beach in Merauke, Papua, is increasingly threatening the safety of local residents, with several homes already sustaining serious damage. As of Wednesday, April 16, 2025, one house near the shoreline was visibly affected, its structure compromised due to the advancing erosion.

In recent years, erosion along this stretch of coastline has intensified significantly. The relentless loss of soil and rock has destabilized building foundations, placing nearby homes at risk of collapse. The situation poses an immediate danger to residents, who fear their houses could give way at any time.

Local communities are urging the government to take swift action by constructing coastal barriers to protect residential areas from further damage.

Experts attribute the worsening erosion to the impacts of climate change, which has triggered rising sea levels, increased storm frequency and intensity, and shifts in rainfall patterns.

Environmental degradation, particularly widespread deforestation in Papua, is cited as a major contributor to these climate shifts. Activists and residents alike are calling on the government to enforce stronger protections for forests and halt environmentally harmful practices across the region.

Perubahan iklim menjadi salah satu pemicu peningkatan abrasi pantai.
