Youth Forum: Guardian of Ecological Democracy
Sophia Nusantara, in collaboration with the Kurawal Foundation, organized a youth forum at Musamus University, Merauke Regency, South Papua, on Saturday, August 23, 2025. The forum, themed “Guardian of Ecological Democracy,” was attended by 50 participants consisting of university students, indigenous youth, and high school students from Merauke.
One of the keynote speakers was Taufik Kasaming, former Director of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) South Sulawesi. According to Taufik, the youth forum represents a collaboration among young people who are concerned about the environment and the fate of indigenous communities affected by the national strategic project (PSN) food estate in Merauke. He also emphasized the importance of courage among youth to speak out against injustices committed by the government.
The same point was echoed by Adam Kurniawan from Walhi National, who also served as a speaker at the forum. Adam said that the enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, but the manipulation of truth. Such practices, he stressed, must not be tolerated, and young people must stand against them.
Meanwhile, Kristianus Vitalis Samkakai, Chair of PMKRI Merauke, stated that the youth forum emerged out of public disappointment with the government. He expressed hope that similar youth forums would be established in various regions as platforms to voice public aspirations.
Forum Pemuda: Guardian of Ecological Democracy
Sophia Nusantara bekerja sama dengan Kurawal Foundation menggelar pertemuan pemuda di Universitas Musamus, Kabupaten Merauke, Papua Selatan pada Sabtu, 23 Agustus 2025. Forum pemuda bertema “Guardian of Ecological Democracy” itu dihadiri oleh 50 pemuda dari kalangan mahasiswa, pemuda adat, serta siswa sekolah menengah atas di Merauke.
Taufik Kasaming, mantan Direktur Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Sulawesi Selatan (Walhi Sulsel) menjadi salah satu pemantik forum. Menurut Taufik, forum pemuda ini adalah bentuk kolaborasi para pemuda yang peduli dengan lingkungan serta nasib masyarakat adat yang terdampak proyek strategis nasional (PSN) food estate di Merauke. Taufik juga menyampaikan pentingnya keberanian para pemuda dalam bersuara, menyampaikan ketidakadilan yang dilakukan pemerintah.
Hal sama juga disampaikan Adam Kurniawan dari Walhi Nasional yang juga menjadi pemantik diskusi di Forum Pemuda tersebut. Adam mengatakan musuh ilmu pengetahuan bukanlah kebodohan. tetapi manipulasi terhadap kebenaran. Hal tersebut, kata Adam, tidak boleh dibiarkan. Para pemuda harus melawannya.
Sementara itu, Kristianus Vitalis Samkakai selaku Ketua PMKRI Kabupaten Merauke mengatakan bahwa forum pemuda lahir dari kekecewaan masyarakat terhadap pemerintah. Dia berharap forum-forum pemuda seperti ini bisa muncul di berbagai tempat sebagai tempat menyuarakan aspirasi publik.
